Gratitude Journaling

Best for Ages 8-12
25-minute weekly class

Class Structure

Each week, learners will think about three things that they are thankful for in their lives. They will be encouraged to dig deeper into their choices through questions about who, what, where, when, why, and how (as applicable). The writing in the journal will be so much more than a mere list! Each reason to be grateful will be followed with a "because statement." For example: "I am grateful for my dog because my dog keeps me company at night."

Each class will begin with a teacher example to help foster the questioning discussion and model how to use "because statements."

Following the teacher's example, learners will think about what they will focus on, their "because statements," and writing in their journals.

Learners who would like to participate in sharing with the group at the end of class.

Learning

All students will be asked to give detailed reasons for their gratitude. We will use a who, what, and where formate to help think of different aspects of life to be thankful for. The teacher will encourage students to begin with basic because sentences. As students return and become better writers, the teacher will show and prompt students to start using varied sentence structures and more in-depth reasons for being grateful.
